Have you ever thought about how you would react if a hostile intruder were to enter your classroom or office?  Although the potential for such an event at the University of Miami has been mitigated through a multitude of proactive preventative security measures, no University in the country is 100% secure.  The above link will take you to a 20 minute hostile intruder training video that will give you a wealth of information and options to consider should the unthinkable happen.  The training video, titled “Shots Fired: When Lightening Strikes,” was prepared by The Center for Personal Protection & Safety, a non-University affiliated vendor.  Thanks to a partnership with the University of Miami Information Technology Department, UMPD is able to provide this training video to our community via the web.

- General UMPD Training Video:

 How much do you know about what the UM Police Department is doing to keep the Coral Gables Campus safe?  This custom video on UMPD will give you a wealth of information about safety on campus, crime prevention programs and services, theft prevention techniques, personal safety techniques and other important information.

- Emergency Quick Reference Guide:

 The University of Miami Police Department has prepared a 2-page general Emergency Quick Reference Guide that provides immediately accessible information on how to respond to various types of emergency situations that could potentially arise at any of the University’s campuses.  Print out a copy for your classroom, office or workspace, and keep it in a highly place.  While no emergency guide could be all-encompassing or account for every specific situation, this guide will give you a good basis for the basics.

- Major Security Measures:

 Did you know that the University of Miami has a multitude of major security measures in place that are aimed at threat detection and threat response?  This list is in no way inclusive of all initiatives and security measures that the University takes, but is rather designed to outline some of the larger and more specific actions.  No single security measure is perfect.  As a result, the University takes a compound and multi-prong approach to safety and protection.

- UMPD Crime Prevention Program Master List:

 The University of Miami Police Department Crime Prevention Office offers 50 different programs and services to the University community.  Just about everything you could need to maintain your safety is readily available to you including safety escorts, self-defense programs, free and discounted locks, safety presentations, and many more.  Check it out.

- Disaster Preparation and Recovery Plan:

 The University of Miami has a comprehensive Disaster Preparation and Recovery Plan to guide emergency preparation and response.  The Hostile Intruder Section of this plan is on page 51.  Each “Unit” within the University must have its own plan as well; if you aren’t familiar with your Unit’s plan, contact your supervisor.

- Threat Assessment Training Presentation:

 The University of Miami Police Department offers a presentation based training program on how to properly interpret and report threats.  Participants will gain a greater familiarity of when to consider certain statements and actions threatening, and working knowledge of how to most appropriately respond.  The length and specificity of this presentation can be tailored to your department’s, organization’s or class’s needs.  For additional program information, and scheduling information, contact the UMPD Crime Prevention Office at (305) 284-1105.

- Hostile Intruder Response Training Presentation:

- Bomb Threat Awareness and Response Training Presentation:
