The Graduate School

A World of Opportunity Awaits You.

The University of Miami has over 5,000 graduate students enrolled in over 150 graduate programs across eleven schools and colleges. Of these graduate students, approximately 2,800 are enrolled in masters and doctoral degree programs; 2,300 are enrolled in professional degree programs in medicine (M.D. degree) and law (J.D. degree). Our graduate programs now include over 50 doctoral programs on three primary campuses (Coral Gables, the Miller School of Medicine and the Rosenstiel School of Marine Sciences). The Ph.D., the Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.) and the Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) are examples of our terminal degree offerings. The University of Miami offers a complete array of programs for graduate study. By supporting and encouraging interdisciplinary study, The Graduate School dissolves the boundaries to allow students access to cutting-edge research and scientific inquiry occurring throughout the University. And we offer this on a compact campus with a high degree of faculty and student interaction.

The University of Miami's strategic plan calls for an increased emphasis on graduate education in the coming years with a particular focus on strengthening our Ph.D. programs. We have been identifying existing areas of strength to ensure that our programs have the resources to be nationally competitive for students and faculty. We will look for opportunities for focused strategic growth, both in program offerings and size. The Graduate School works closely with the deans of the Schools and Colleges to track student progress and placement and we are making strides in making sure that our award packages to students are competitive. Through the process of program review, we are helping guide the future development of our programs. Our goal is to increase the national prominence of our Ph.D. programs.

The Graduate School will continue to play a key role in the recruitment and retention of minority Ph.D. students to address the shortage of minority faculty. Our participation in the Florida Education Fund's McKnight Fellowship program, the National Name Exchange, and the NSF-Sponsored Southeast Alliance for the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences exemplify our support for the mission of diversity in graduate education. The Graduate School targets recruitment events specific to minority students who are interested in pursuing doctoral education. We are already one of the more diverse Graduate Schools in the country, but we can do even more to increase the degree of participation in graduate education and the professoriate.

The graduate faculty of the University are committed to mentoring students as they contribute to the creation of new knowledge. Students are well-prepared to make original contributions and graduate to become leaders in their field in academe, industry or government. The Graduate School acts as a resource center for graduate students at the University. Both prospective and current students have access to a team of experienced administrators, providing guidance about program offerings, admissions guidelines, dissertation editing and electronic submission, and preparation for a career in the academy. Graduate education is fundamental to the mission of the University of Miami.

We are a place of research, and a world of opportunity.
