Biography John Hall is proof of the adage that you don’t have to leave home to go far…he is a native Miamian whose family roots in Florida stretch back to the mid-nineteenth century. And after an outstanding performance as a Civil Engineering student at UM where he graduated Cum Laude, John didn’t go far geographically to achieve career success. After working for Ludovici & Orange Consulting Engineers as a resident engineer/designer while he was still in school, he joined the firm professionally upon graduation in 1974. John rose steadily through the ranks, becoming a project manager in 1975, assistant vice president in 1978, and vice president/secretary in 1983. He assumed the presidency of the firm in 1988, a position he still holds. Ludovici & Orange, headquartered in Coral Gables , Florida is involved in a variety of projects including subdivision planning and platting, storm water management, roadways, drainage, water and sewer systems and construction survey. Throughout his professional career, John has been deeply involved in the Florida Engineering Society and has taken a strong leadership role, serving as chair of various committees, the president of the Miami FES chapter, the regional vice president and president-elect. At the 89 th annual FES Summer Conference and Exposition held August 3-5, John was inducted as FES president for the upcoming year. This signal leadership honor reflects the esteem and respect John is accorded by all who know and work with him. John has participated in a wide variety of service and professional organizations throughout his career, including memberships in the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), the Florida Engineering Foundation (FEF), the Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE), the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and Engineering Ministries International (EMI). Additionally John has remained involved in service organizations here in South Florida including the South Miami-Dade Watershed Plan Advisory Committee and the Zoning Code Advisory Subcommittee among many others. As an active member of the Builders Association of South Florida John has served on the board of directors, as a member and chair of the environmental committee and as chair of the public works subcommittee. As a loyal and dedicated UM alumnus John has also been a strong supporter of his alma mater. He has served on the College of Engineering ’s Industry Advisory Board for the Civil Engineering department, as the College’s Alumni President, and has been a keynote speaker for the College of Engineering commencement program. He has also been an adjunct faculty member and remains a dedicated and caring mentor and support for students at the College. John is a member of Iron Arrow, the highest honor attained at the University of Miami . The College of Engineering is delighted to recognize John Hall in this month’s Alumni Profile. His energy, enthusiasm and dedication to the University of Miami and the College of Engineering is reflected in all his activities and he truly represents the best of what being a UM Hurricane is all about! |

5 Questions for John Hall: 1. What was your first job when you graduated from college?
First job is same job I have now. Engineer for Ludovici & Orange.
2. What was the most important thing you learned at the university?
Self assurance and interdependence
3. What advice would you give to someone starting his/her career as an engineer?
Don't be disillusioned or discouraged when you enter the "real" world. Engineering is a noble profession. Stick with it.
4. What do you think will be the most important advance or change in your field in the next 10 years?
I'll retire.
5. What was your favorite spot on campus and why did you love it?
The parking lot exit. I was a commuter student, going home to mama's cooking and my high school sweetheart (now my wife, still my sweetheart). |
